January on the Farm

Winter Weather Warnings Everywhere

It feels like winter weather warnings have been popping up left and right across the nation, and here at Lochan Zanda Highlands, we’re doing our best to brace for whatever the season throws our way. It’s cold. It’s windy. And if we’re being honest—it’s getting a little old. While we unfortunately don’t control the weather, we do know how to endure it.

Our winter survival kit looks something like this: a hot cup of coffee (or three), at least three layers to keep the wind at bay, and blasting the heat in the truck whenever we can sneak a moment between chores. It’s not glamorous, but it gets the job done.

Thankfully, the coos are built for this kind of weather. With their thick, shaggy coats, they stay warm by snuggling close and keeping busy with plenty of hay. Cold weather tends to bring out their playful side too—higher activity helps generate extra body heat, after all. You’ll often catch them running, jumping, and generally acting a little silly in the pasture. As I write this, two of our younger bulls are happily butting heads, clearly unfazed by the chill. The older coos—more seasoned, if you will—prefer a slower pace, opting to lounge in the hay while the youngsters burn off energy.

Originally, our first Journal Club meeting was scheduled for tomorrow, January 31. However, with yet another winter storm warning looming, we’ve made the decision to cancel. Road conditions could quickly become unsafe, and the safety of our coos and our visitors will always be our top priority. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone for our first meeting on February 28th at 12 PM, when we’re hopeful for calmer weather and safer travels.

Until then, friends—we’ll see you in February.
Rest well, stay warm, and take good care.

Best,
The Coo Crew 🐮❄️
